Chapter 25

Sorrow is better than laughter,

for by sadness of countenance the heart is made glad.

                                                                                Bible, Ecclesiastes

As we walked to the car, I asked Mindy if she was awake enough to drive. Following her reassurances, I promptly fell asleep. Deep asleep. And I had my second to last talk with Jay.

"Lovejoy."

"Is it you, Jehovah?"

"Don't call me that. I already got in trouble."

"Who puts you in trouble?"

"My teachers. They pulled me off your project. And they were very upset that I let you believe I was Jehovah."

"Well, who are you?"

"I'm Jay. Jehovah's one of the teachers."

"What about Buddy?"

"Same thing. Only he didn't tell you he was Buddha. I did."

"Jay?"

"What?"

"What grade are you in?"

"Fourth."

"How many grades are there?"

"Two hundred sixteen, in this school."

"How many schools are there?"

"It just goes on and on."

"I thought you had to have perfected Love to be in your level."

"We did, but we didn't perfect Will."

"So you have good intentions but can't always carry them out.""

"Sort of."

"Then what makes you better than the trespassers. You're just mucking around with our lives; our entire planet."

"Careful. We're still a lot bigger than you."

"So much for Love."

"And our experiments are sanctioned."

"I don't care if their sanctioned by God himself if they're just experiments."

"The teachers watch over it all."

"There's that problem of Evil again. How can they make it right when there's so much suffering down here?"

"You only grow when there's a little shove."

"I can't believe that. You'd torture and kill people to teach them lessons?"

"When you can tell me how an acorn turns into an oak tree, I'll tell you the answer to that question."

"That's what you, or one from your school, told Job. Meanwhile we're still suffering."

No answer.

"Jay? Do you suffer?"

"I have to say goodbye." Jay sounded somber.

"Wait a minute!"

"I've been reassigned." Jay said.

"What do you mean?"

"I told you your world lines split when Lucy went back and allowed those trespassers into your 'Garden of Eden'. The teachers are putting me in charge of the Soltrey with the original plan. The one where you didn't eat the apple of self-knowledge."

"I'll miss you. Will it be difficult for you?"

"No'in some ways it's easier. Without the warp that the mushroom put into your aura, there's a more natural progression from self awareness into life in the ethereal world."

"So why do you sound sad?"

"I feel like you're my project, even if it was changed by others."

"Who's in charge on this time line?"

"Buddy. Well, Buddy and the teachers. You see their plan is to guide these two world lines back into each other. If we can marry the two approaches to humanity's evolution, then it's a big success."

"And if we can't?"

"Solvingen."

"What's that?"

"Another planet in your system."

"I've never heard of it."

"Now it's your asteroid belt."
