Chapter 28

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven.

                                                                    John Milton, Paradise Lost

Lucy's friends were frantic. "They're getting too close." The Diamonds told Lucy. "Soon they'll turn that scientific understanding of free will into an open door. They'll flee the coop."

"Not so fast." Lucy replied. "We have all worked on this Garden too long to give up now. These humans would be in the Stone Age if it weren't for us pushing them onward after Ellie left. We fed them the fruit of the first tree, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. We made them see us, and then themselves. We built up their egos so we could manipulate them towards our purposes. They have served us well with their wars and bloodshed, their emotional tantrums and pent-up anger. This is our unending source of energy, no matter how tortured it is. We need their energy to survive ever since the teachers cut us off."

"That's right." Angie Diamond said. "They call us trespassers, but we're the real gardeners."

"And the garden's reapers." Chortled Nick Diamond.

"Those fools Buddy and Jay think the humans will be happy to learn love from the teachers. They won't tell the people they'll just end up as anonymous cells in some new organism. I want my own power, and this little 'E-group' is not going to ruin it for me. I have one more trick in my bag to keep them from the second Tree. We'll keep their science and religion as impossible foes. And we'll make certain they never learn to use their own vehicles the way Ellie planned."
