A New Theory of Human Consciousness
By Brian Brown, MD
This Webspace book includes a neurally based theory of the evolution of Human consciousness and why the two paradigms of religion and science were the first to develop.
This site is for your enjoyment. Its purpose is to stimulate thought, discussion and conjecture regarding one of the most challenging frontiers facing modern science. What Is Mind? Ultimately all philosophical inquiries may be influenced by the answer to this question.
Descartes' struggle with the Mind-Body enigma was a very compelling effort, but certainly not the first. The riddle of Mind and our conscious self-awareness remains unanswered four centuries later. How can we explain this perspective on life which we call consciousness? Is it generated by our brain? Perhaps body and brain? Or do we need to invoke metaphysical concepts?
What if we are able to show how consciousness and subjective awareness are generated by the human nervous system? Does that necessarily change our religious suppositions of God, a Soul and life after death? What does it mean for philosophical concepts of Free Will and the human animal's place in the grand pattern of Nature? How does it influence epistemological considerations of how we 'know' about the world we live in?
Within the playful dialogue and personal stories, several serious and original hypotheses are offered regarding human cognition and evolution.
There are two ways to live your life.
One is as though nothing is a miracle.
The other is as though everything is a miracle.
